USING YOUR FAMILY WEB SITES

Here are some quick instructions, prompted by Talsan’s enquiring mind on how to use your web page…  I remember training Tyrus some first hand, but hopefully this will help everyone!

FIRST YOU HAVE TO MAKE OR MODIFY THE WEB PAGE (*.htm or *.html file)

This can actually be done in Microsoft Word.  If you just want to take the page I already made for you, you can either download it off the server by using the “Save As” option in your web browser, or you can use the FTP instructions below to transfer it over.  Then open it up inside Microsoft Word and save it again as a *.htm or *.html file.

NOTE: When you move files back over to the server, you’ll have to also move the folders it might have created with the same name as your webpage, so you have all the right links for pictures or other kinds of elements of the page.

If you know what you’re doing, you might avoid Microsoft Word altogether and work out of a text file, like I normally do (except for these instructions because I have little time… hehehe).

UPLOAD YOUR PAGE(S) - DIRECT FTP COMMAND LINES

If you know ftp commands, you can simply open up a command prompt window and type (for example, for talsan’s page):

ftp talsan.schulzke.org

Username: talsan

Password: (Email Quintus to get this)

UPLOAD YOUR PAGE(S) – USING AN FTP PROGRAM

The best free FTP program I’ve found is available for free from the following site:

http://www.download.com/3120-20_4-0.html?qt=core+ftp+lite&tg=dl-2001

It’s called “Core FTP Lite”, and it’s currently posted as version 1.3

After you download it, double click the icon to install it:

After install, the icon and shortcut should now be on our workspace.

Here are a few setup and use instructions:

  1. Double-click to open and I would recommend the first time clicking No at the “Default FTP Program prompt
  2. The next prompt, it’s up to you…  I said no again just to avoid any program conflicts
  3. Here’s the first thing that will be presented
  4. Use the Site Manager window to set up your connection to your family site
  5. Here’s a setup example.  To do this, type in some name like “Talsan family page”; for Host, type in talsan.schulzke.org ; username: talsan ; password: (Email Quintus to get this) ; the other defaults here should work fine, so click “Connect”
  6. If your ID does not work, use this one instead: “schulzke” ; password: (Email Quintus to get this).
  7. When you access this using schulzke, on the server side of the screen (right hand side with all the server files), you’ll want to change the folder you’re in to “public_html” (as seen below) and in that find your family site file (for example “talsan”) as seen below.
  8. Once you’re inside your family site file, you can transfer files from your local computer to the server and vice versa by being in the appropriate folders on both sides of the screen and using the large blue arrow buttons to make the transfer.
  9. You can create a new directory under your website. For example, you can have a place where you post a group of pictures without any “index file” so the address would be http://talsan.schulzke.org/pics use the yellow folder icon (third from the left on the top line) and name the directory “pics”, creating it new in the “talsan” folder.
  10. If you have other questions, Email Quintus to and he’ll try to add other sections to these instructions to address those questions.  Good luck!

Sincerely,
